Four bugs squashed on 14 September. Here’s what changed, and the one thing you might want to do about it.

Deleting a site now deletes it

Until 14 September, deleting a site removed it from your dashboard and nothing else. Its files stayed on our servers and its pages stayed online at their old addresses. When we found it, eight deleted sites were still reachable at nine addresses.

Deleting a site now takes it offline at once and removes its files. A clean-up runs every hour to catch anything that slips through, including the sites of closed accounts. The eight leftover sites are gone.

Deleting a site also cancels any paid add-on on it.

If you deleted a site before 14 September, it is offline now. You don’t need to do anything.

Folder uploads keep their folders

If your site doesn’t need a build, you can publish it by uploading files on the Deployments page. The Folder option was losing every subfolder. A file at css/style.css arrived as style.css, so pages lost their styles and images, and two files with the same name in different folders overwrote each other. The upload page said “Subdirectory structure is preserved”. It wasn’t.

Folders now arrive as they left your computer. If you have ever published with the Folder option, upload it again and the missing pieces will come back.

Zipped folders work

Most people make a zip by zipping a folder, which puts everything inside that folder. We published it exactly as it came, so your home page sat one level down and visitors to your address got “not found”.

If everything in your upload sits inside one folder and that folder holds an index.html, we now move its contents to the top. If there’s no index.html anywhere at the top, the upload still goes through and we tell you your home page will show “not found”. Some people upload only images to use elsewhere, and that’s fine.

Mac clutter stays off your site

Macs leave a .DS_Store file in every folder you open, and zipping on a Mac adds a __MACOSX folder. Both used to get published alongside your site. We now leave them out, from uploads and from Git builds.

What to do

If your site builds from Git, nothing changes for you. If you publish by uploading, upload once more, from the folder or a fresh zip, and check your home page.
