A comparison table in a customer’s blog post was coming out as six lines of text with pipe characters in them. The markdown was missing the row of dashes that sits under the heading row and tells Hugo it is looking at a table. Nothing on the page says so. You get paragraph text, no table, and no error anywhere to explain it.

That is an easy mistake to make by hand and an impossible one to make with a widget, so we built the widget.

What it does

There is now a Table option in the Sveltia editor. Select the cells in Word or Excel, copy them, paste them in, and you get a valid markdown table with the divider row written for you. A CSV works. So does a markdown table you already have, which is how you fix one that stopped rendering: cut the lines out of the body, insert the component, paste them back.

You also get a caption field. Fill it in: a screen reader reads the caption out before the contents, and a table without one is announced as “table” and nothing more.

The markup underneath

Hugo’s built-in table template gives you a bare <table>: no caption, no scope on the header cells so a screen reader cannot say which heading belongs to which cell, and no wrapper, so a wide table drags the whole page sideways on a phone.

The render hook we publish fixes all three, and it applies to every table on your site, including ones written by hand years ago. Add the file and they improve on the next build.

What it costs and what it takes

Nothing, on any plan. You need a Hugo site edited through Sveltia CMS, two template files copied into your repository, and one script tag added to your admin page. The content tools guide has the files and the steps.

Tables are the first thing this extension does. Next is an on-demand check of the page you are writing: SEO and social metadata, heading order, links that go nowhere, images with no alt text.
